Roots - summary

 The author tells a story about an old woman who is unable to understand the intricacies of Partition. She doesn’t want to leave her house for newly formed Pakistan. She loves her roots and doesn’t want to get cutoff from her roots. She is not ready to leave her land, country and her neighbors and likens this leaving to death. “Time passed on, but Amma stayed steadfast in her position like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and blizzards.” These lines tells us how deeply and stubbornly amma wanted to be there. She's also worried that how the new soil would be which she depicts as “Who knows whether the new soil will be conducive to these saplings or make them wilt. These poor saplings.”  Ammas love and care and her life devoted to us is endless as we can see in these lines " ten images of flesh and blood - ten human beings were born in that hallowed room from that sacred womb".  ROOTS- LITERARY APPRECIATION Ismat Chugtai is an Urdu writer who portraited the lives of many poor innocent loving people who had to face the misery of man-made religious disaster. She also used to convey the life and situation of middle-class women on the age. ‘roots’ is the short story which is the combination of the both. Interpersonal relationships and boundless love are the key elements that Ismat Chugtai’s work. Roots is an fictional extract depicting the real life miseries that the common people have to come across during the Indo-Pak partition. ‘Who knows whether the new soil will be conducive for these saplings or make them wilt, these Poor saplings.’ Expresses the love and concern of a mother her children. ROOTS LITERARY APPRECIATION Roots is a short story by Ismat Chugtai which is an depiction of reality on an around the time of India-Pakistan partition. The story presents the love and care that each religion and people have for one another at the mist of communal hatred. The Urdu writer Ismat Chugtai have made the work that provoke the emotions of the readers through a lot of literary expressions which could be found throughout the narration. The feelings were getting stronger while going along with the story. ‘Deadly wound that it would feaster for years to come’, ‘blunt knife of arteries were left open rivers of blood flowed’, shows the pathetic and terrible miseries of poor Indians that they have to face on the timeline. ROOTS LITERARY APPRECIATION:  By Anjali PV 20umat3731  India has always been a country with a lot of space to accommodate different cultures, religion, ethnicity and what not . Ismat Chugtai , an author with commendable story telling skills succeeded in keeping the reader on the edge through each and every line . The protagonist here is “Amma” , a strong willed lady with a lot of love and respect for everyone around her and so is the other way . The story takes wonderful twirls and turns ..good enough to make a grown man cry by the end . Memories hold invisible souls, is something that Chugtais ink conveyed to me .  In fact, Ismat Chugtais words spoke volumes throught the story, one could easily identify that she has a good way with her words . Roots mourns over  the lost of an oldmother where her children decide to move to Pakisthan by leaving Amma here.This story mainly focused on  relationship between the neighbouring hindu and muslim family (Abba's  and Rupchandji) .The family lived in love but partition also seperated their love to each other.
