 ROOTS- LITERARY APPRECIATION

Ismat Chugtai is an Urdu writer who portraited the lives of many poor innocent loving people who had to face the misery of man-made religious disaster. She also used to convey the life and situation of middle-class women on the age. ‘roots’ is the short story which is the combination of the both. Interpersonal relationships and boundless love are the key elements that Ismat Chugtai’s work. Roots is an fictional extract depicting the real life miseries that the common people have to come across during the Indo-Pak partition.

‘Who knows whether the new soil will be conducive for these saplings or make them wilt, these Poor saplings.’ Expresses the love and concern of a mother her children. She in her thoughts is lost  and compares her children with saplings and their home as roots.

’Own land’ is also the expression that the mother is obsessed about. Amma was not sure about the new place that her children are going to reside. The place where one was born and bought up feels like no more their own land and the place that her children to going to be found and yet to be set up is confined to called to be their own place was unacceptable by Amma.

‘If one sneeze, one ran there’ is also a clear manifestation of love. The two families neither Hindus nor Muslims was named after them. All they had was love to one other. It was harder to distinguish between both family. No geographical territory or religious demarcation could mark a line of separation between them.

‘Time passed on, but Amma stayed steadfast in her position like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and blizzards.’ Picturizes a strong lady facing numerous problems and hazardous. Even it is harder she is becoming stronger to survive and becoming a shelter for her loved ones. Its roots is deeply enrooted and its branches are widely spread. More of a person, she’s solely the entire family’s soul.

‘Roots’ can’t be evolved and enriched on an eve or other. It took countless time to be shaped and flourish. It is also the same for a home more than a house. Man as a social being can’t sustain on the grounds of religion or any other sort of classifications. The place where one is born and bought up along with orientation and culture can’t go easy on a new land and it grew harder when it is because of driven forces.
