Roots
The short story "Roots" by Ismat Chugtai explains the relationship between Hindu and Muslim families and how the division of India breaks their relationship. The whole story shows the bond between the two families and the mother's love for her hometown. It also shows the impact of partition over Indian lives.
1. “Rivers of blood flowed”. These lines show how pathetic the situation of India where many were killed in that time.
2. “Deadly wound that it would fester for years to come”. shows how much pain people suffered after partition.
3. “Between these two flags there was a chasm mile wide”. Here the two families were once very intimate to each other. However, due to the separation of India, the families have separated and there was a mile-wide gap between these two families.
4. “Time passed on, but Amma stayed steadfast in here position like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and blizzards”. Here all other family members expect Amma uprooted to newly formed Pakistan but she refuses and stays.
5. “India was operated upon the clumsy hands and blunt knives that thousands of arteries were left open”. Here colonial British power is personified us clumsy hands.
