HOW WOMEN IN RURAL INDIA TURNED COURAGE INTO CAPITAL [Merlin Chacko, I BA Sociology]

Chetna Gala Sinha is a social activist , founder and President of Mann Deshi Bank,India's first Bank for and by rural women.

Chetna was born and raised in Mumbai .Her marriage to Vijay Sinha a fellow activist and a farmer leader was the turning point in her life .So  she quit  her urban lifestyle and moved to Mhaswad ,a village which is a drought prone area. Most  of the people were illiterate. She witnessed the day-to-day difficulties faced by rural women for earning. One day a woman approached Chetna by telling that she needs a saving account .When they approached a bank ,the officers rejected it. So for helping the poor women ,Chetna applied for a banking license in Reserve Bank of India. RBI rejected her application by telling that many of the promoting members were illiterate. So under Chetna , rural women started to join in literary classes. After 5 months Chetna with these women again approached RBI. At this time ,they challenged RBI officers to do mathematical problem  with them ,without a calculator . Under the strong determination and hard work, these women calculated first and at last they got banking license .

Chetna with these women found Mann Deshi  Mahila Bank, which is India's first rural bank for and by women to get corporate license  from RBI. This bank had a rapid growth and support . Today more than 10,000 women are banking in Mann Deshi  and have more than 20 million dollars as capital .

In 2006, she found first business school for women .From this school women were able to  develop their entrepreneur ideas and skills .There is also a sports school named 'Champions'for women.  A girl named Saritha from a shepherd community who is a student in 'Champion 'is going to represent India in Tokyo Olympics. Another woman named Sunitha Gambade from untouchable caste with the help of Sinha became a veterinary doctor.

Like this there are more women who developed their skills, talents , knowledge , capital, courage etc with the help of Chetna. She takes her full effort  to uplift and make a space for women in the society. The success stories of Sinha are very motivational and countless. Indian government honoured her by giving Nari Shakthi award ,which is the biggest civilian award for women. She also received many national and international awards.

Here Chetna shares the stories of the women who encouraged her and continue to push her to come up with solutions. She influenced and empowered women and   turned their courage into capital.
