'Roots' a short story written by Ismath Chugthai is a fictional take on the impact of partition on interpersonal relationships as well as the idea as the home and community.
The story takes before the declaration of independence of India and Pakistan where migrations have already begun. The narrative is seen from the perspective of 'Amma' giving as an understanding on how women experienced the partition. The old woman is unable to understand the intricacies of partition and doesn't want to leave her house. She loves her roots and doesn't want to cut off her roots.
"Time passed on but Amma stayed steadfast like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and bizzards". Amma is not ready to leave her land , neighbours and likens this leaving to death.

Finally her children, grandchildren and relatives leaves amma and migrates to Pakistan. But she couldn't sleep the whole night thinking about them.
"Who knows whether the new soil will be conductive to these saplings or make them wilt". She fears whether her children will be able to survive or get killed in the way.
Later Roopchandji, the Hindu neighbour brings back Amma's children back and Amma heaves a sigh of relief.
The story depicts the deep love between the Hindu and Muslim families not ready for partition.
