 ROOTS


Roots is a short story written by Ismat Chughtal.The story is a narrated by author itself. The language of the story is simple and beautiful. It encapusalutes the partition weaving a beautiful plot around the relationship between a hindu and a muslim family. Amma is the protagonist of this story. Author relates to us with an extrene sensitivity to the agony which people faced during the partition. The agony of having to leave one's birthplace, culture Amma does not want to cut off he from roots.She doesn’t want to leave her house for newly formed Pakistan.The story thus throws light on question of nationality.A member of the neighbouring Hindu family brings an end to the travails of Amma in this night of unquiet, by persuading the refugees to come back to their house.Climax of the story is reunion of two families.The author used a lot of figure of speech to make the story beautiful.


This story is rich with literary devices


1. She had nursed the crop with her heart's blood through fifty years.


     Here family her personified as crop. She spent her good time of her life for family and take the family.


2.But there was no oil in the lamp that day,and the wick had burnt out 


Here author symbolises mother.


3.But even a lamp whose oil has run out shudders before it's final gasp.


Here's symbolises Amma , She drained of all her strength. 


4.Time passed on, but Amma stayed steadfast in here position like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and blizzards.


Here all other family members expect Amma uprooted to newly formed pakistan but she refuses to be uprooted and stubbornly stays so author personified the strength us Amma


5.India was operated upon the clumsy hands and blunt knives that thousands of arteries were left open.


 Here colonial British power is personified us clumsy hands
