Literary appreciation of the roots (Thomaskutty Mathew, BA Sociology, 20usoc3602)
The Roots is a beautiful short story written by Ismat Chughtai. Ismat Chughtai in her short stories has depicted the oppression and misery of middle class Muslim women with artistic depth. Ismat Chughtai's short stories helped in bringing out many complications in society which would rather have been unknown to people in India.
Roots is a fictional take on the impact of the Partition on interpersonal relationships, memory as well as the idea of 'home' and 'community'.
Literary Devices
1. Deadly wound that it would fester for years to come - personification (partition).
The partition of India is being compared to a deadly wound. Deadly wound symbolises how painful the partition was.
2. But there was no oil in the lamp that day,and the wick had burnt out - symbolises Amma
3. She had nursed the crop with her heart's blood
These symbolises the attitude of the mother. She was scared about what will be the condition in the new land.
4. But even a lamp whose oil has run out shudders before it's final gasp.
5. Then two pearls of warm tears trickled down.
Tears are being personified.
