 ROOTS(Ismat Chugtai)


Roots is a short story by Ismat Chugtai which is an depiction of reality on an around the time of India-Pakistan partition. The story presents the love and care that two families have for one another at the mist of communal hatred. Ismat Chugtai have made the work that provoke the emotions of the readers through a lot of figures of speech. 


 1. “Two pearls of warm tears trickled down”




   The warm tears represent the tear of happiness of Amma when her children came back. And it is considered as valuable and precious.


2. "Who knows whether the new soil will be conducive to these saplings or make them wilt."




Amma couldn't sleep that night, thinking whether her children and other relatives will be able to survive in the new land or get killed on the way.


3. "She had nursed the crop with her heart's blood through fifty years."




           Amma's family is personified to crop.Amma take care of her family. She spent her good time of her life for the betterment of family.She built her family over her life and hardwork. Now she is scared about her children's condition in new land.



4. "But even a lamp whose oil has run out shudders before it's final gasp."




Here's symbolises Amma , She drained of all her strength. 




5. "Time passed on, but Amma stayed steadfast in here position like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and blizzards."




Here all other family members expect Amma uprooted to newly formed pakistan but she refuses to be uprooted and stubbornly stays so author personified the strength us Amma
