Goat Days- Benyamin (Alen Shibu-20umat3734, Group 2)

'Goat days' is a true story of Najeeb Mohammed,  like every other Malayalee he migrates to the Arab country(Saudi) ,to loot all the gems and Jewels and to fullfill his dreams .The story is narrated in  first person which makes you feel Najeeb himself is sitting besides you telling his dreadful, gruesome yet uplifting story.

I have heard many stories of people working there, but what this tale  reveals is beyond one's imagination.Humans, being treated as animals.Without any bestowment of basic needs.

Initially I was wondering , why Najeeb mentioned being in prison the safest, a place equivalent to heaven.

Throughout the book I had a hard time putting myself in his shoes. Goathearding in scorching heat and peircing cold of the desert. No one can even imagine being lashed for using water for sanitation purpose. Forget  about the bath. He was even denied  food and water and was locked with the goats as punishment, which lead him to eat the wheat and water from goat's pail and sleeping with them , as one among them. Thus , living with Goats he was turning into a Goat himself !

I was astounded by the depth of hope  and belief he had in God , for he never complained and lose faith  during his sufferings.  And also admired the way he looked at the desert during different seasons, talking to goats and naming each one of them.

This tale of Najeeb is not only a moral for those who gives up easily, even on facing the slightest obstacle in life .But also for those who takes every little thing in life for granted. The water. The food.Even a shade in summer. If you think how unfair your life is, then this book is for you.

Hope! That was all he had all throughout the story . Hope for success, Hope that he could see his family again , Hope that he could wake up the next day , and most importantly the hope for freedom! This hope is what that made him go through all these suffering.

Like the old saying 'there's always a happy ending' , if it's not happy it's not the end !
