Chetna was born and raised in Mumbai .Her marriage to Vijay Sinha a fellow activist and a farmer leader was the turning point in her life .So she quit her urban lifestyle and moved to Mhaswad ,a village which is a drought prone area. Most of the people were illiterate. She witnessed the day-to-day difficulties faced by rural women for earning. One day a woman approached Chetna by telling that she needs a saving account .When they approached a bank ,the officers rejected it. So for helping the poor women ,Chetna applied for a banking license in Reserve Bank of India. RBI rejected her application by telling that many of the promoting members were illiterate.
