The Idli Maker | Ted Talk by P.C Mustafa | Reviewed by Natasha Maria Davis, Sociology Department
THE IDLI MAKER
A friendly debate has been wiring up the fences of social
media since a few days. A British Professor Edward Anderson had tweeted ‘idli’
to be the most boring breakfast. This comment flared up the sentiments of idli
lovers all over the world including our own M.P Shashi Tharoor who was also
dejected by this tweet which later cooked up a strong debate between them.
The hero of our story is our own humble fluffy white idli.
Here is a review on a ted talk by the founding person of ID
{instant idli and dosa batter}, Mr P.C Mustafa. From being the son of a kooli,
his journey from a school dropout to an engineering graduate was not an easy
task. He later worked in MNCs in India after completing his studies. The desire
in him to provide employment to children in his village pushed him to move out
from being an employee to an entrepreneur.
With an aim of building up his own business, Mustafa founded
a simple yet demanding product along with his cousins. ID fresh food a private
company was thus born in 2005. They produced the humble idli, dosa and other
fresh foods. His business flourished and was listed by Forbes India as ‘Tycoons
of Tomorrow’.
Five incidents gave him inspiration to become what he is
today. The first incident gave insight that you learn a lot of things through
your mistakes. Second is that having a straight path without shortcuts and
holding tight to your values will definitely help you to reach your goal.
Thirdly you should have the courage to take the road that is less travelled and
take tough decisions. Fourthly money is never ours, it comes and then goes. Trust
others so that they will trust you and you can see the change you wanted to
see. Lastly common sense is a solution to many of the problems around you.
We Keralites can be proud of our fellow brother who has
conquered the world’s breakfast platter through his hard work and simplicity.
Last but not the least practice what you preach.
