Changing Gender Discrimination in the Movie Industry : Rima Kallingal : By Devichandana .S
I have watched Tedxtalk of Rima kallingal's which was held in Thiruvananthapuram. She talked about gender discrimination in the film industry. The well-known actress introduced herself as a feminist . She begins the speech by sharing her childhood experiences where she firstly recognized discrimination in the form of a " fish fry" , it made a concern that ,why she is not considered for it . From there, her journey of questioning the injustice existed in the society has started.
Then she talks about the male supremacy in the film industry that is, the male actors are given more opportunity than female actors to explore their carrier in the industry. Even the scripts are written for men to get more exposure to their heroic material. Female actors are not considered as an essential element in industry that's why they are paid only 1/3rd comparing to male actors . she said that, "Is life imitating art or art imitating life?Either way , we have a problem " . She also mentioned the unsupportive response given by the prominent actors towards the molestation case of a Malayalam actress in 2017. she proudly said that she was one of the founding members of the "women in cinema collective (WCC) " were formed for breaking the silence and asking question for female actors in the film industry .
Towards the end of the speech she conveyed her idea by borrowing a dialogue from Sivaji Ganeshan's Thevar movie and then concluded her speech by hoping that our future generation will not have to ask what our past generation could not ask.
