ROOTS by ismat chugtai

Roots Manojkumar_20umat3721 'Roots' a short story written by Ismath Chugthai is a fictional take on the impact of partition on interpersonal relationships as well as the idea as the home and community.   The story takes before the declaration of independence of India and Pakistan where migrations have already begun. The narrative is seen from the perspective of 'Amma' giving as an understanding on how women experienced the partition. The old woman is unable to understand the intricacies of partition and doesn't want to leave her house. She loves her roots and doesn't want to cut off her roots.  "Time passed on but Amma stayed steadfast like a banyan tree that stands upright through storms and bizzards".
