TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD (HARPER LEE) (TEAM 2) ( SANDRA.T)
'To kil a mocking bird' is a great novel and the best one to start with. As a beginner in reading it was really the best option for me. To kill a mocking bird by Harper Lee is an American classic published in 1960. The events described in the story are based on the incidents that occured in the author's hometown, Albama, when she was around 9. The story deals with racial injustice and shrewd castism with utmost decency and humour.
The story is narrated through the eyes of a six year old Jean Louise Finch, daughter of Atticus Finch, attorney at law, over the period of 3 years. Its a story that revolves around a sibling (Jem and scout) and their lives which are affected by some unexpected twist and turns while living with their only single parent and their caretaker Calpurnia. His way of upbringing is looked down upon by his relatives, neighbours, teachers, friends and the children are constantly reprimamded by everyone only to be supported by him fairly.
Their smooth life takes a rocky turn when their father, a righteous attorney, takes up a case to defend a black man, who is accused of heinous crime. The story describes about the challenges they faces together as a family , and also how innocent minds question the very basic fundamentals of the society which adults are even afraid to think. This story was written during the time when there existed extreme racism and deep rooted castism.
The main characters are so well described that I was able to relate to them, their reasoning and their actions. The father's character is the soul of the story. It is a beautiful novel with a deep insightful meaning. A must read !
