THE KITE RUNNER ~ Ann Maria Joseph (Team 3)
The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini is the story of Amir, a Sunni Muslim, who struggles to find his place in the world as the aftereffects of a traumatic childhood.Amir struggles with forging a closer relationship with his father, Baba; who is more considerate about their servant's son ,Hassan.During a crucial time, during an important kite flying tournament, Amir decides ,not to confront bullies when he had a chance .As a result Hassan was mistreated by Assef and his friends which made Amir filled with guilt. Later he and Baba moved to America which changed the approach of Baba to Amir. The latter half of the book focuses on Amir's attempts to make up for his flaws by rescuing Hassan's son two decades later as a atone for not only his but Baba's sins too.
"When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness."
These are the lines taught to Amir by his Baba. The story revolves a lotearound this quote.
All together I felt that the story is all about love ,sacrifice, betrayal , guilt and redemption. After reading the novel we learn to forgive oneself. The writing draws you in and seamlessly creates a movie in your mind. The best message here is how everyone can always become a better person no matter how past was lived, and the first step is to forgive themselves. That’s the hardest thing to do sometimes, even if everyone else, most importantly God, has already forgiven you.
