THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN YOU

                                  By

                       LEO TOLSTOY

I have been influenced by the book, "The kingdom of God is within you", written by Leo Tolstoy. The book, is non-fictional and a treatise on Philosophy. It can be considered as the Magnum Opus of Tolstoy. The book is cited by Mahatma Gandhi as influential. In it he forcefully explains his reasons for rejecting militarism and warfare as solutions to humanity’s problems. He is very persuasive, and his ideas are laid out logically.

The title of the book originates from the biblical chapter of Luke 17:21, which says "nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”  In the book, Tolstoy speaks of the principle of Non-violent resistance, as taught by Jesus Christ.

According to Tolstoy, "How can you kill people, when it is written in God's commandment: 'Thou shalt not murder'?"
When Christ says to turn the other cheek, Tolstoy asserts that Christ means to abolish violence, even the defensive kind, and to give up revenge. Tolstoy took the view that all governments who waged war are an affront to Christian principles. Tolstoy sought to separate its teachings of the state  from what he believed to be the true gospel  of Christ, specifically the Sermon on the Mount.

The Kingdom of God Is Within You lays out a new organization for society based on what he saw as the key elements of Jesus’s teachings: freedom, peace, love. The book powerfully exposes the hypocrisy of the Christian Church – “professing Christ in words and denying His teaching in life”. Mahatma Gandhi wrote in his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth that Tolstoy's book "overwhelmed" him, and "left an abiding impression."  I highly recommend this book. It's enlightening and educational.
