SITA
'The root of every tree that enters the earth whispers a name:Sita. Who is she? Do you know?'-asked Vasuki to Hanuman.
Sita, the princess of Mithila... the beloved of Rama and the epic Ramayana is so well known that it need not to be repeated!
I'm not such a good reader, I barely read some chosen books. Among those chosen books, my most favourite one is Devdutt Pattanaik's SITA. It is an illustrated retelling of the epic Ramayana. Every reader will have different realms of reading. And as a reader, I'm a great admirer of epics and myths! It was the main reason that attracted me towards this book. One day I found one of my friends reading this book and I was then fascinated by the title of the book- SITA. And once I start reading the book, gradually I became smitten with the character of Sita as well as with my own name-Seetha!
The book opens with the remark:
"To all those who believe that Mahabharata is more realistic and complex than Ramayana." Devdutt Pattanaik has wrote, illustrated and lectured on the relevance of the mythology. As we all know Valmiki's Ramayana narrates the life of Rama, a legendary prince of Ayodhya, Pattanaik's Ramayana is not a simple retelling of Valmiki's version of Ramayana. He had made it more significant by taking into account the stories that are not widely known. It mainly revolves around Sita, who is called Bhumija- daughter of the earth, Maithili- princess of Mithila, Vaidehi- the lady from Videha, Janaki- she who chose Janaka! Here the author is again unfolding about Sita's birth, her father, her childhood, her wisdom, her marriage, her stay in jungle with her husband, her abduction, her connection with earth- everything through Sita's eyes! Along with that it also talks about the different characters, working of human mind, nature, dharma etc.. And we can find in depth meaning in the conversations that takes place between the characters.
Through simple and penetrating language, the author succeeded in illustrating the epic through the eyes of Sita. He makes us travel by that 'Pushpakavimana' through twists and turns of the timeless tale!
