Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone by J.K.Rowling (ABHIRAMI T V, BSC MATHS, 1ST YR)

Books are very good friends. I really enjoy reading books. They enhance our imagination and they help us to go to another world without moving from the place.

My favourite book is HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE by J K ROWLING. There are 7 books in this series namely Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone, Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets, Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the goblet of fire, Harry Potter and the order of phoenix, Harry Potter and the half blood prince, Harry Potter and the deathly hallows.

J K ROWLING conceived the idea of HARRY POTTER in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train from Manchester to London King’s Cross. Over the next five years, she began to map out all seven books of the series. She wrote mostly in longhand and gradually built up a mass of notes, many of which were scribbled on odd scraps of paper.

Harry Potter and the philosophers stone, being the first book where everything is just to begin is my favourite among the series. It is a fantasy fiction. It is a story about Harry Potter, an orphan brought up by his aunt and uncle because his parents were killed when he was a baby. Harry had grown up with his naughty cousin who bullies him all the time. Harry is not loved by his uncle and aunt and they do not treat him properly. Harry had to suffer a lot to live in that house with these muggles (it is the term used to describe people who do not have magical ability or do not have any magical blood inside them). But everything changes when he is invited to join Hogwarts, a school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The owls deliver him the letter to join Hogwarts but his uncle takes it away and finally after a lot of chaos he gets the letter and his journey starts. At Hogwarts Harry makes friends with Ron and Hermione. Their adventure begins when they attempt to solve the mystery of Philosophers stone. Frankly speaking, from the very beginning until the end the book kept me on the edge of my seat. There is never a boring or dull moment, whether its battling with trolls, a three headed giant dog, football played on broomsticks (it is a famous game in their world called QUIDDITCH), or harry facing Lord Voldemort the main dark villain.

One of my favourite line in this book is “the truth. It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution”.

One of the famous quotes which I like is “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light”- this is from the book Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban.

Both these lines are said by Albus Dumbledor who plays the character of head master at Hogwarts.

I am a potterhead (one who loves the Harry Potter series of books and is a diehard fans of the series) and Harry Potter is my favourite since a long time. Also, I like this website called pottermore which is a digital world of harry potter where there is a lot of quizzes and it is a digital publishing, ecommerce, entertainment, and news company from J K ROWLING and is a global digital publisher of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World. It offers news, features, and articles as well as new and previously unreleased writing by J K ROWLING.
