THREE MYTHS OF INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM: A TEDX TALK BY VINAY MENON

 THREE MYTHS OF INDIAN ED
UCATION SYSTEM

Three Myths of Indian Educational system is a Tedx talk by Vinay Menon, an English teacher and a stand up comedian. He started the talk by asking ‘How many of you woke up today to learn something new?’  He saw only five hands rising up. He says that people coming to an education institutions treat learning as a foreign concept, which led to another question- “What is the point of current educational system in India?”. He says that people give boring answers that it is to get a job, to have financial stability and to have marriage…., etc. Vinay Menon himself don’t have an answer for it. But he quotes that he can give a fresh prospective on a few things for finding its answer.  He says that English education was introduced for the sake of British rule. They wanted people to sit at a desk, do as they told without getting too creative. This bring us to the first myth.

1) THE ALL MIGHTY SYLLABUS

Our education system is about memorizing, it’s not about understanding. He reminisce his teachers saying about integration and differentiation will be useful in life. He continued that he had no idea about which aspect of our life requires integration and differentiation. He conveys that teaching students based upon a syllabus which is all about information without absorbing or fully understanding will be outdated.

2)  ART IS NOT IMPORTANT

Art is an integral part which makes us humans. The British wanted people to work in factories and as officers, so they focused on stem subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Art is a field in which people don’t teach kids. Vinay Menon says that creativity is about making a mistake and learning from it. But in our education system mistakes are not allowed.

3) DISCIPLINE REQUIRES PUNISHMENT

Children today are afraid to make mistakes. He doesn’t think that there is no silly question but there may be silly intentions.

He says that our education system doesn’t help our children. In order to change our system, we should take lot of effort. He concludes by saying that he would wish to live in a future where he walks into a class and ask them “how many of you woke up today morning to learn something new?” and instead of five hands going up he would like to have six hands.

The talk is a very humorous one which talks us about the current educational system and the changes to be happened from our side. Vinay Menon gives a clear cut image of our prevailing educational system.
